To shave or not to??!! The million dollar question , I am sure every woman would have thought of at least once in her life time. But the latest controversy over the internet where a certain someone posted HER pictures on HER Face book Wall, feeling utterly and blissfully comfortable with the now notorious armpits in full glory, made me sit up and think!! The public backlash reached such frenzied heights of insanity my feelings it scared the hair out of my thoughts. Was it the posting of picture that caused the venomous back lash, or the concept of unshaven not unclean mind it armpits??!! A daring few did support the tiny controversial pit and the other just not caring. It was a bit heartening to note them. Whatever would have been their thoughts , it is sad that many felt it their birth right to be obscene and vicious to the extent of name calling to something which was a matter of personal choice! Many of us as a child would have been fascinated by the slow and sudden appearance of this most talked about HAIR!! I have also been, believe me. I would keep looking at it for long, wondering whether I like it or not. I felt maybe somewhat similar to how a boy would feel about his moustache beginning to grow and show!! But the comparison ended there. It was later, through my years of growing up, I learnt that a boy can flaunt the presence or absence of his moustache on the same vein, but alas! But for as far back as my memory goes, I have seen armpits all hairy. I remember my mom sporting it and never giving it another thought! What is the big deal anyway?? It was the time when the sleeve less culture among ladies had still not caught up and no one actually thought of the absence of this HAIR. Bikinis and sleeveless outfits were relegated to the movies and then too me and my friends who also had a nice patch to compare never did actually give two hoots about Hairy Armpits! We never even knew that they could be rid of! We would just show off unabashed in the trendiest of dress any time anywhere. After a period of vigorous growth activity, the HAIR stopped growing and I settled to a comfortable life with my hairy armpits. Their presence never really affecting any of my activities. I finished school life and most of my college life sporting it and trust me, I wore every kind of outfit with it. It was later that there was a shift in culture, a tiny winy shift brought about by media presence. Slowly but surely the media invaded our privacy and lay bare IT'S thoughts on anything and everything. The world of advertisements was so colourful and eye catching, it actually left me speechless and choice less! I think the Razor market was the main culprit!! Shaving, the crude word which was used mostly in relation to MEN and their facial hair only, now changed stance All the beautiful models armed with their particular razor brand or hair removing lotions and creams made it more and more appealing and a necessity! Beauty parlours mushroomed everywhere and raked in the moolah, managing to promote this concept more and more. And that was exactly how I managed to get rid of it! It was continuous one henceforth. Now I had to allot time and energy to this seemingly unnecessary task. I had to be forever cautious not to let it start growing back as that was the most irritating and noticeable part. A part of me rebelled. I felt that much of what we thought was beautiful or needed by us women , was more centred around what men thought or was projected as. What was once a very personal affair or matter of personal choice, no longer remained so. Why, you may ask, this thought was important? It was because, whether we like it or not, our lives centres around what the men liked! The eve of my wedding was spent in a parlour getting rid of the HAIR!! As that was what I thought was expected! After my marriage, life became too hectic with children, nappies and feeds to create time for this task and it was then that I realised that the hairy armpit did not really matter either to me or my husband unless we actually gave it particular thought. And it was the same with my friends and their men too!! I felt that it was totally a hype created for lack of anything else. This being one part of the Hairy story, the other one was more important and relevant - the hygiene part. This was the only reason that kept me at it even though not very regularly. We would all agree that clean shaven under arms are more aesthetic and hygienic than otherwise. Either way one has to take very good care of this particular anatomy , as it is more prone to infection due to sweat and moisture. It has been noticed that hairy underarms retain the sweat and hence cause it to smell bad enough to repel everyone away. Unless one is cautious and particular in their cleaning and powdering habits, it is better to sport clean shaven armpits.
But this long overdue shift in society's standards of female beauty wouldn't have been possible without the women who bucked convention in the first place. Women and femmes are far from a monolith, however. I do my stomach; I do my pubic area; I do my legs, my ass, my arms, armpits. Comedian Kate Smurthwaite, 41, appeared on the daytime television show alongside the year-old model and mother-of-two to debate the topic, after Madonna 's daughter Lourdes was snapped sporting armpit hair - and she insisted men were not put off by the excess fuzz. It also awoke deep anger and frustration that shaving was an expectancy for women and our beauty was dependent on it. Is that stupid? I love that I don't have to endure the torture of making my crotch somehow socially acceptable. I hated it and was made miserable by it Whatever would have been their thoughts , it is sad that many felt it their birth right to be obscene and vicious to the extent of name calling to something which was a matter of personal choice! Or Lola Kirke , who took the Golden Globes red carpet with visible, sweetheart-neckline-adjacent body hair. I think having hairy armpits helps ward off the sort of men who think that sort of thing is important. For the next few months, I explored everything: I had one of those epilator devices that would just pull the hairs out; I tried wax; I tried all different things. Before the first swim practice I worried about what the coach and other people practicing would think about my unshaveness. And when actress and social-justice activist Amandla Stenberg sported underarm fluff at the European premiere of The Hate U Give , it was yet another powerful norm-questioning moment. This story is about a girl, mean boys, summer camp, expectations, and one very nice boy. This is a story about my body hair. Karl came across a website called Woman in the Raw about a month ago through Instagram. You can read what Karl and I wrote here on my blog, but it appeared first on Woman in the Raw. I really hope you take a look at their site and read what others have written there. The thought of shaving and body hair never really occurred to me. I remember other girls in my cabin pulling out supplies to shave their legs before dances with boys. I put the shaving cream on my face as a joke. Shaving was the farthest thing from my mind. In sixth grade my legs started to get hairy and for the first time I was explicitly told that hairy is not how a woman should be. One day I wore shorts to school, I walked up to the front of the room in Reading class to write an answer to a question on the board. Not soon after that I asked my mom if I could start shaving. The next year, in seventh grade, a boy in my Social Studies class made fun of how hairy my arms were. I had never considered my body hair, but suddenly there was too much of it. Throwback Thursday to that time piebelly was au natural hiking in Brown County! So, I started shaving. My safe haven was that summer camp. Most summers, I headed off to the mountains of North Carolina where I was surrounded by strong, confident women. The hiking and climbing staff was notorious for not shaving. I saw them every day, sporting their hairy legs and arms, and I thought they were, well, just normal. Here, every girl was just herself, no fakeness, no make up, no cool kids, no weird kids. Looking back, I know those summers as a camper influenced my decision to go natural today. My summers on staff there did, too. Fast forward to May of , I met a guy named Karl. He was everything awesome. As the fall approached he decided to do No Shave November, and with a bit of convincing, I joined him. We were so excited to start not shaving that No Shave November began at the end of August. For me, the excitement was doing something out of the norm. How many women join their men in not shaving? But I kept on not shaving. As summer approached, I started to get nervous. My coworker and I frequent the pool at the gym connected to our office. Was I going to lay out by the pool all natural in my bikini? My armpit hair was pretty long at this point and was starting to sprout out of certain shirts. No one in my office told me to cover up my pits and no one at the pool gave me more than a lingering glance. And runners? Legs get itchy! I like shaving when and if I feel like it, being hairy when and if I feel like it, not because I feel like I have to. And some days I still get nervous about baring my natural hair. I recently trained for a sprint triathlon at my gym. Before the first swim practice I worried about what the coach and other people practicing would think about my unshaveness. All this time, there has been Karl. It turns out that Karl is really into an all natural lady. Maybe this story would be better if I had discovered on my own that going all natural felt beautiful, but in reality I needed a little push. I needed someone to tell me that my hairy legs and arms, the things that boys had mocked before, were sexy.
